The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has asked the German government to support the bloc on its industrial agenda.
SADC Executive Secretary Dr. Stergomena Tax was speaking with the Germany Federal government’s regional director for Sub-Saharan Africa and Sahel Ambassador George Schmidt.
She said SADC was committed to drive the industrialisation agenda with the ultimate objective of reducing poverty through the creation of jobs and enhance the capacity of member states to produce and trade competitively.
“Infrastructure development, peace, and security are key priorities that will enable industrialization in the bloc,” she said.
According to her, regional integration was crucial and Germany government could help to support SADC in these priority areas, and utilize investment opportunities arising from the integrated market.
The ES welcomed the Ambassador Schmidt and commended the government of the Federal Republic of Germany for its continued support towards regional integration and development through the secretariat as well as bilateral arrangements with member states.
She further underscored the importance of enhancing implementation of the regional integration agenda at the national level, and commending Germany for supporting SADC through the “Strengthening the National Regional Linkages in SADC” programme(SNRL) that aims to foster the integration of the regional agenda in national policy-making processes.
On his part, Ambassador Schmidt expressed gratitude for the cordial relationship that exists between the community and the Germany government.
He commended the SADC Secretariat and its leadership for championing regional integration and development while assuring Dr. Tax for a continued support.
