TEN people have died in Kigoma today morning after a cargo train collided with a passenger bus.
Reports from the police in the region say, 23 other passengers have sustained serious injuries.
Kigoma Regional Commander, Martin Otieno said the bus was thrown 100 meters away from the site of the collision, leaving many passengers trapped in the wreckage.
"Residents in the region were still pulling passengers trapped in the wreckage of the bus. We fear that the number of people killed in the grisly accident might rise," he said.
According to the commander, some trapped bodies were in pieces in the worst road accident to have occurred in the region.
The bus was traveling from Kigoma town, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika to Tabora region in the central part of the country
Commander Otieno said the cargo train was moving from the east African country's commercial capital of Dar es Salaam to Kigoma.
He said the bus left Kigoma town at 6 am when visibility was still poor, we suspect the driver of the bus could not see the oncoming train. "We are still conducting investigations to establish the cause of the accident," he said
