At least five people have died and several others wounded in a car accident, which involved a passenger bus T497BJB Yutong dubbed AJ Safari and a Toyota Hiace T591AKE at Mwituni area in the outskirts of Kabuku Township, Tanga region.
Police in Tanga region said the accident happened along Chalinze-Segera highway around 11:00 A.M.
The Tanga Acting Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Leonce Rwegasira confirmed the accident saying the two vehicles collided face to face.
He said the bus, AJ bus Safari was being driven by Khalifa Mussa Omari, a resident of Chamazi, Dar es Salaam.
An eyewitness, Ali Juma, a resident of Kabuku township explained that the accident occurred when a Toyota Hiace min bus driver tried to overtake another vehicle in front of him at a sharp corner area.
He said the Toyota Hiace which plies from Mkata to Segera daily, was coming from Mkata heading to Segera while AJ Safari bus was coming from Arusha-Lushoto heading to Dar es salaam.
He said all the deceased were men who were in the Toyota Hiace.
“They died on the spot,” said he acting RPC.
He further explained that the min bus was severely damaged because it entered under AJ bus.
Rwegasira said the mini bus was the major source of the accident when it tried to overtake another vehicle at a sharp corner.
The bodies of deceased could not immediately be identified and were taken to Magunga district hospital at Korogwe district together with severely injured passengers.
Others were rushed to Kabuku dispensary.
