THE government has banned with immediate effect all fishing activities taking place along the Rufiji River bordering Selous National Park in southern part of the country.
Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Abdallah Uledi said today in parliament during a the question and answers session that the decision comes after discovering that some few unscrupulous fishermen were sailing with firearms to kill wild animals in the park.
He said the government has issued a directive requiring all fishermen to carry on their fishing activities in dams which are far away from the national park.
The deputy minister was responding to the question earlier raised by Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Kibiti legislator Ally Seif Ungando who wanted to know the measures taken by the government to protect the national park and the fishing activities done in the Rifiji River in his constituency.
