THE government will conduct a research to establish the cause of coconut crop withering in the coastal region.
Minister for Agriculture Dr. Charles Tizeba said today in the parliament that plant withering has become a common disease in many plants and the government was already working on it.
He was responding to a supplementary question raised by special seat legislator for Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Zainabu Matitu Vullu who wanted to know government steps to control the disease that had affected coconuts production.
Earlier, special seat legislator Safrina Sungura (CCM) asked the minister on why the government did not take coconut farming more seriously in Kigoma region due to its economic importance.
Responding, the deputy minister of Agriculture Dr. Mary Mwanjelwa said the board has already been formed in Tabora to look into the welfare of farmers cultivating the crop in Kigoma and the country at large.
Mtama legislator Nape Nnauye (CCM) also raised a supplementary question wanting to know the effectiveness of zonal offices to monitor food crops in the country especially at Naliendele centre at Mtwara.
The deputy minister said the centres were well equipped with tools and expertise to make regular follow ups on agricultural problems facing the respective areas and the country at large.
