Bunge News: Institution to conduct marine research in Lake Rukwa

By Emmanuel Onyango

THE Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) will be funded to carry out research on various economic research activities on marine creatures in Lake Rukwa, the parliament was told today.

Deputy minister for Livestock and fisheries Abdallah Ulega said while responding to a question earlier raised by Songwe legislator Phillip Mulugo who wanted to know government strategies on researching the Lake which has become beneficial to the people to increase their income.

The MP said sometimes activities in the lake are suspended to allow fish breeding which denies income to residents living along the shores.

Ulega said the government had already set aside funds for the research institute to look into the biodiversity of the lake and help people living around the lake.

Towards the end of last year, regional leaders had suspended fishing activities in the lake with a common purpose that targeted to increase its breeding.
