MINISTER of Home Affairs Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba said in parliament today that the police force need to target and arrest only criminals and never should they hold in custody family members, wife or husband of the suspect.
“There is no substitute for a suspected criminal be it a wife, husband or family member,” the minister said.
The minister was responding to a supplementary question raised by Chadema special seat legislator Devota Minja who wanted to know why police officers hold in custody innocent civilians once they fail to arrest the suspect criminal.
Minja said wives, children and parents including relatives of the suspected criminal were in various police custody for no reasons.
Responding, the minister said police officers need to perform their duties according to the laid down procedures.
He said police are not permitted to arrest someone on behalf of the criminal and subject them to torture for an offence committed by another person.
The legislator asked following the recent apprehension of a 29 years old expectant woman in Kilombero district whose husband was wanted by the police for purchasing a stolen property.
