TANZANIA and Malawi governments are still sticking with their quest to construct a dam at Songwe River to the southern part of the country for electricity, fishing and irrigation purposes.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has already shown interest to fund the project which is already drafted.
Minister for Water and Irrigation Isack Kamwelwe said today in parliament that three water dams will be constructed in different phases to promote agriculture through irrigation once the funds are availed.
The minister was speaking during a question and answer session in parliament where he said the project would help to preserve water for various purposes.
Prior to the project, preliminary preps are also underway to compensate families living close to the scheme.
The minister was responding to a question earlier raised by Ileje legislator Janet Mbene (CCM) who wanted to know from the water ministry about the long awaited water irrigation scheme in Songwe start.
the minister said the government was keen at ensuring it accomplishes various irrigation projects in the country.
