SPECIAL seats legislator, Bupe Mwakang’ata (CCM) has appealed to government to make sure that all people who pave the way for the expansion of new airport in Sumbawanga district, Rukwa region are compensated.

Speaking during question and answer session, the MP asked the government to explain as to when the compensation exercise would kick off.

“These people have surrendered their land for the airport expansion, you have to make sure that they are paid, but I want to know when?”, she queried.

Responding the Deputy Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Elias Kwandikwa said the government is now verifying names of people who will be compensated.

He said after verification exercise completed, they will embark on construction activities since the contractor has been appointed

“The construction work will be done by the Chinese firm known as Sino Over Seas in a period of eighteen months,” he said.

Apart from Sumbawanga other airports that would be renovated through European Investment Bank loan include Kigoma, Kagera, Tabora and Shinyanga

Improvement of the five airports is expected to enhance international safety standards, provide all weather operation and expand the facilities to cater for projected growth.

In June last year, EIB Board of Directors approved 7.4 billion Euros of new financing of 38 projects across Europe and globally.

The bank, the European Union’s long-term lending institution, has agreed to provide 50 million Euros in longterm funding to enhance the country’s limited air transport infrastructure, which impedes economic growth
