At least 83 Ethiopian nationals and a Tanzanian arrested by the immigration department in Iringa Region on Saturday have appeared before the court today (Sunday).
The immigrants are charged with breaching the Immigration Act by entering in the country illegally.
Iringa Regional Immigration Officer Senior Assistant Commissioner of Immigration Hope Kawawa said the groups of 83 illegal male Ethiopians were arrested at Mbigili Village, Kilolo District in Iringa region yesterday.
A Tanzania national was also among the arrested and is being charged with transporting the illegal immigrants from Dar es Salaam to South Africa where they were destined for greener pastures via Malawi and Zambia.
He said the Tanzanian had loaded the illegal immigrants in a Scania Truck with Reg. No T903 AKH belonging to Gabriel Mwakyambiki of Tukuyu in Mbeya Region.
Kawawa said yesterday on February 24 that a Tanzanian was paid to transport the group of illegal immigrants from Dar es Salaam to the borders in South Africa.
Last week, the immigration department in the region nabbed four Ethiopian nationals illegal immigrants, thus bringing the number to 87 since the start of crackdown on illegal immigrants in the region.
It is reported that at least 37 million Ethiopians continue to wallow in poverty, according to recent the recent World Bank report, thus forcing them to leave their country for greener pasture elsewhere.
