Periods of heavy rainfall likely to continue in Tanzania

THE Tanzania Metrological Agency (TMA) has said that periods of heavy rainfall are likely to continue in some parts of the country especially the coastal strip during the month of May.

According to its monthly forecast, showers with occasional thunderstorms are expected over some areas in the regions of Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Morogoro and Coast as well as in Unguja and Pemba Islands.
In an interview  TMA Director of research and applied meteorology Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a he said the general public should take precautions ahead of the rains that may lead to another wave of water related diseases.
He said that the ongoing rainy season (masika) over most areas of the northern coast, Lake Victoria Basin, north eastern highlands and most areas of northern which started March, 2017 are expected to continue during the whole month of May.
According to him, the rains come due the continued enhancement of the rainfall making mechanism over the northern coast.
In north eastern highlands, regions of Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara will experience rain showers with occasional thunderstorms and are expected over few areas. These rains are expected to be mainly normal. 
In Lake Victoria Basin (Kagera, Geita, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Mara and Simiyu regions), rain showers with thunderstorms are expected, mainly during the 1st half of the month. These rains are expected to be normal to below normal. 
Western regions (Kigoma, Katavi and Tabora regions); Occasional rain showers with thunderstorms are expected. The rains are likely to be normal to below normal. Central areas (Dodoma and Singida regions); occasional rains, with isolated thunderstorms are expected. The rains are expected to be normal to below normal.
Southwestern highlands (Rukwa, Njombe, Iringa and Mbeya region); will experience occasional rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected. The rains are expected to be normal to below normal.
In southern coast (Mtwara and Lindi regions); frequent rain showers and thunderstorms are expected, mainly during the 1st half of the period. The rains are expected to be normal to above normal. Southern region (Ruvuma region)  will experience occasional rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected.
