PRESIDENT John Magufuli has today appointed Prof Shukuruni Manya a new Commissioner for Minerals, replacing Benjamin Mchwampaka who served the post in less than a year.
Mchwampaka was appointed in April last year who before he served as deputy commissioner for small scale mining.
Announcing his appointment at State House in Dar es Salaam , President Magufuli said Prof Mwanya has vast experience in mining industry.
“This ministry has a lot of challenges I appoint him to collaborate with other officials to overcome them,” he said.
Before appointment, Prof Manya was a Director of Research at University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) responsible for implementing and guiding all the research related policies.
As a professional, Prof Manya has developed a keen interest in the geochemistry of igneous rocks particularly the gold-bearing Archaean greenstone belts of northern Tanzania and those of Proterozoic belts of southwestern Tanzania.
Emphasis is on the use of major, trace element geochemical data, isotope and U-Pb zircon dating to unravel the timing of magmatism and mineralization, ancient tectonic setting and processes responsible for the generation of various magmatic rocks.
He has a result of continuous 10+ years of research, published 23 articles in high quality peer reviewed journals, a chapter in a book and co-authored a book on the Gold Atlas of Tanzania.
He has also co-authored a new mineralogical map of Tanzania with description notes and supervised 5 MSc students in Geochemistry.
