THE government said it has apprehended 13,393 illegal immigrants in the country between July 2016 and March 2018, the deputy minister for Home Affairs Hamad Masauni said.
The deputy minister was responding to a question raised by a special seat legislator Shomari Hamisi who wanted to know the number of illegal immigrants so far apprehended in the country.
Responding, Masauni said of the said number, about 6,315 were charged in court and fined for illegal stay in the country and at east 2,393 cases are still in court.
The minister said the government has issued a strong warning to employers with a tendency of hiding foreign workers without exposing their work permits.
“We want to know their legal stay in the country, because it is a criminal offence to stay in the country without a permit,” he said.
Regarding the status of children born from a couple from a foreign country residing in Tanzania, the deputy minister said the laws of the land recognizes such children as Tanzania citizen.
