SOME of the retired employees of Tanzania Railway Limited (TRL) are requesting President Dr. John Pombe Magufuli to intervene and help them to be paid their pension, privileges and transfer allowances which they have been claiming for more than five years now.
The retired pensioners who are claiming their retirement dues retired from 2012 to June, 2017 and all over the years have been claiming for their privileges without any success.
Speaking to Azania Post today, the pensioners said their biggest claim was on transfer allowances to enable them to carrying their consignments with families back to their villages.
Selungwi Ubwe, the Retirees Secretary said there were more than 100 retired staff in various regions in the country who have failed to return back home for lack of income.
“We are claiming for fares to ship our cargo and families back home. But we also claim for our retirement pensions,” he said.
Ubwe explained further that there is a retirement procedure where a retiree is given bonuses especially corrugated iron sheets, 50 bags of cement and cash depending on the mount of salaries one gets and timeframe one work for the office.
On his part, a retired Ally Makubi said the company (TRL) had to pay for all their rights as they were trustful for the whole period of their service.
"When a staff retires, doesn’t have anything to depend on except pension and bonuses in order to run his daily life. So it is fair if the government hurries to pay our privileges on time,” he said.
Clarifying on the retirees’ complaints, the Tanzanian Railway Workers' Union (TRAWU) Secretary, Christopher Kaziyo said his Union has requested to meet the PPF Pension Fund which is supposed to pay them in order to know their fate.
When contacted the TRL Managing Director Masanja Kadogosa said no single retired person who has not been paid transport allowances because the funds are paid soon after a staff retires.
"No one is demanding a transport allowances because the fund is paid soon after retirement. The Pension issue is not ours. It is the social security fund which is supposed to pay them,” he said.
He however affirmed that the retirees have not been paid bonuses which have some complications.
“This matter is under discussions to end this confusion so that they are paid soon,” said Kadogosa.
