Baptism ceremony turned into sorrow after two followers of Shalom Church died while being receiving a sacrament of baptism in Rombo district Kilimanjaro region, northern Tanzania.

Police in Kilimanjaro Region is holding a cleric of the church Faida Upendo allegedly to cause death of the two men.

The baptism was taking place in the Ugwasi River at Rombo area, whereas the deceased were immersed in the depth running water before drowned following the heavier waves of the river.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Hamis Selemani confirmed the death of two men named Gasper Gervas (47 years) resident of Mkindi Village and Proches Msema (30 years) a resident of Mandachini village both were farmers.

“We are holding the church Pastor and other followers for interrogation. We are holding them for further investigation to understand on how others dead and some of the people managed to escape death.

The bodies have preserved at Huruma Hospital in Rombo District.

RPC Selemani cautioned users of the river to avoid making such activities including the baptism process in rivers without checking and knowing the depth of the water to avoid other related accidents.
