Rwanda's effort to ban the use of plastic bags that had been implemented over 10 years ago has won the country recognition as the safest and cleanest nation in the entire African continent.
Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said the country's initiative to maintain cleanliness and protect the environment should be praised.
"Although still known as a country that has emerged from a civil war, Rwanda has demonstrated high patriotism and commitment, especially in their local government's cleanliness management and administration structure," she said in a statement here yesterday.
She said praise should also be given to the people of Rwanda who were so sensitive about cleanliness.
"This is because they practice a culture that is taken up as their patriotic responsibility to reprimand anyone who does not care about cleanliness, especially those who litter," she said.
