THE government has ordered mining companies operating in the country to issue employment contracts to all miners without discrimination.
Deputy Minister for Minerals Hon Dotto Biteko issued the directive while on an inspection tour at Magamba coal mine at Magamba Ward in Mbozi district.
The minister said he was disappointed to see that a number of employees in mining sites were operating without employment contracts, which was dangerous for their lives.
He gave the mining firm 14 days ultimatum until March 9 next month to finish the audit report and submit it as per the directives issued by the zonal mining office.
“If you fail to submit the audit report, you will have violated the conditions stipulated in the mining license,” the minister said.
He said the move will also show that Magamba coal mine was no longer responsible to the local community that surrounds them, thus forcing the ministry to take legal action against them.
According to the minister, the mining firm needs to be more responsible to the community around them by ensuring it provides health and education social services to the community.
“The government intends to revive an effective economy to the people living around mining sites,” the minister said.
