TANZANIA is organizing an annual local government accountability seminar to discuss challenges and development of accounting sector later on this month in Dodoma region.
The three day event scheduled to start on 22 November this year is organized by the Tanzania Association of Accounts (TAA)
Speaking to Azania Post in an interview, the TAA Secretary General Dyoya Dyoya said the seminar is for responsible officials from public sector and more specifically local government authorities (LGA).
He said the objectives of the seminar is to provide a forum where specific professional issues pertaining to the challenges faced by LGA will be discussed.
Another purpose is to build capacity and efficiency for mayors, directors LGA accountants, auditors and procurement officers.
Speaking when officiating annual general meeting for accountants late last year , the Minister for Finance and Planning Dr Philip Mpango was quoted as saying account sector faces various challenges such as misuse of funds, corruption and unqualified accounts who cannot meer international standards.
He said despite government efforts to fight corruption , there is still a lot of stealing and misuse of public fundsm especially by members of the accounting sector.
He blamed auditors and accountants who conceal the names of dishonest collegues who have been sacked over professional misconduct , which enable such bad elements to be re-employed elsewhere and resume their bad ways.
TAA is an accountancy professional organization for accountants, it was established in 1983 under the Friendly Societies Act of 1954, as a members' representative body of all professional accountants and aspiring accountants registered and working in Tanzania.
Its mission is to provide services to and on behalf of its member in public accounting, industry, education and government aimed at facilitating their professional and social development and promote public confidence in their service.
