THE Tanzanian government has ordered Nyarugusu gold mine in Geita Region to settle an outstanding compensation debt to the tune of Sh. 202m to 123 Nyarugusu villagers or risks license revocation.
Deputy Minister for Minerals Stanislaus Nyongo told the investor when he toured the area today (Tuesday).
He said the mining firm should honor the government order and ensure that all villagers were compensated accordingly.
The deputy minister told the irate villagers who took upon themselves and blocked the mining entrance that they were facing difficulties in farming due to uncontrolled water contamination flowing in their farms.
Earlier, a villager identified as Shadrak Mashaka said water contamination in their farms has been denying them enough yields during growing seasons causing famine in the area.
He said days after the contaminated water flooding, the government dispatched a team of experts in collaboration with an investor to determine the extent of the problem, also instructing villagers to open up bank accounts for compensation funds.
However, he said to-date, they have not received any compensation.
The investor claimed the exercise was not conducted fairly with a number of false names put on the compensation list.
