GOVERNMENT authorities in Manyara region will start issuing more than 9,000identity cards to miners and tanzanite dealers working within fenced area in Mererani.

Speaking in an interview the Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Minerals, Prof Simon Msanjila, said a total of 9,073 identity cards will  be issued effective  today.

He said President John Magufuli will today( Friday) launch the 24 km wall which was constructed by Suma JKT for a period of  four months.

Prof Msanjila said stern security measures would deployed at the area to ensure that only  people with identity are allowed to conduct their business within fenced vicinity.

However speaking on the challenges facing sector, the deputy minister  for minerals, Dotto Biteko said recently that Tanzania wants to see people who are involved in mining precious stones including Tanzanite and diamond are locals.

He said  the National Identification Authority (NIDA) in partnership with his ministry will start issuing national identification cards to residents in the mining areas.

“There will be two identification cards, that to be issued by the authority and the mining identification from our ministry,” he said .

Biteko said the main objective of using such identification is to make sure that local miners do benefit with the precious gemstone.

Meanwhile deputy minister said Tanzania has started plans to auction diamond in the local market so as to draw international buyers in the country.

He said the government hopes that the establishment of the diamond auction centre at local settings will attract buyers from various corners of the world to Tanzania.

Currently, the auctioning of the precious gemstones is done in Antwerp, Belgium, a trend that denies the government of its rightful revenues.

Stakeholders say notorious smuggling of Tanzanite Gemstones is what prompted the government to erect a wall surrounding the mineral extracting zone in Mirerani.

Recent reports show that Tanzanite Gemstones worth billions of shillings are smuggled out of the country annually through illegal means..
