Tanzania President Dr John Magufuli has launched the construction of more than 700 kilometers of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Makutupora in Dodoma on Wednesday.

The project would require more workers with different skills to perform various tasks, citing civil works, which constitute 60 per cent of the entire project, electrification, and signal engineering.

Once construction of the second phase construction commence, people in civil works comprising designing, building culverts and bridges will be highly required.

However, President Magufuli expressed disappointment at the way tax body is doing to discourage tax payers by inflating tax charges thus discouraging tax payment.

Magufuli was speaking at the launch of the second phase Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project in Dodoma.

The second phase SGR project starts from Morogoro to Ihumwa station at Makutupora in Dodoma region covering 426 km.

He said that tax body should not be the reasons for taxpayers to dodge tax payment but make them feel proud of paying taxes to the government.

“Taxes need to be determined by the size and type of the business entity and not through estimations as is currently being done by some few untrusted TRA officials,” he said.

Giving an example on property tax, the president said he had earlier directed the tax body to fix a flat rate to enable every house owner to pay.

“This is not being implemented; some taxpayers are now being charged huge amounts of money by some few untrustworthy TRA workers,” he said.

He directed the commissioner general and the minister of finance to oversee the exercise to avoid unnecessary complaints from the taxpayers.
