TANZANIAN President Dr John Magufuli lays a foundation stone for the construction of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) headquarters in Dodoma municipal on Wednesday morning.
However, before the launching ceremony, President Magufuli ordered government organs to take stern measures against any person or organization that would provide false statistics to the public.
He issued directives today in Dodoma municipal when laying foundation stone for the Headquarters of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)
According to Section 37 (5) of the Statistics Act of 2017, an agency or person who publishes or communicates official statistical information which may result in the distortion of facts, commits an offence.
The law further states that the person or agency shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than 10m/- or imprisonment for a term of not less than three years, or both.
“I ask government organs to use this act against any person or organization which would publish statistics contrary to those issued by NBS,” he said.
Dr Magufuli said there should be no any person emerge with false information for his interests, since NBS has been tasked to do the job.
He asked members of media to continue using statistics provided by the NBS and Bank of Tanzania and not otherwise.
“Accurate and comprehensive data are inevitable in serious and sensitive decision making for development of Tanzania,” he insisted.
President Magufuli urged government departments to provide any kind of information that would be needed by the bureau of statistics.
He expressed gratitude development partners for their collaboration in funding for the office building which is situated within Dodoma municipal.
“We thank World Bank, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and UK department for International Development (DFID) for funding the building”, he added.
On her part, the NBS Director General Dr. Albina Chuwa said its headquarters structure in Dodoma will be completed in time to allow its staff to shift to the new Capital City early next year.
She said the Y&P Company Limited, which is overseeing the construction, has pledged-to complete the work as per the time-line shown in the contract.
According to her, the-headquarters estimated to cost shillings 11.6billion will accommodate all NBS workers as well as having conference halls and all the other necessary amenities.

His arrest follows a day after the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) called for legal actions against MP for what they claimed he was issuing false statistics on National Economic Growth.
According to media reports, the NBS Statistics Manager, Daniel Maswola, pointed out that the MP was quoted saying that the National Economic Growth for the second quarter was at 5.7 per cent instead of the actual 7.8 per cent.
