THE National Parliament has been told that the government is currently conducting feasibility studies for the expansion of Ujiji and Kibirizi ports in Kigoma region.
Located in the Lake Tanganyika in western part of the country, once the feasibility study is complete, the government would float tenders to select a reliable contractor for ports expansion.
The move would allow the country to serve more land-rocked countries of Burundi, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) including Uganda.
The Deputy Minister for works, Transport and Communication Atashasta Nditiye said today in parliament during questions and answers sessions after the Kigoma urban legislator Kabwe Zitto (ACT) raised a question to know the current development.
Zitto wanted to know the outcome of the meeting led by the minister held in the region regarding the possibilities of land-rocked countries using the ports in his constituency.
The minister said upgrading of the ports in the region would be done hand in hand with Tanga port that will also speed up the exportation of Hoima gas.
