THE Ministry of Industry , Trade and Investment in Tanzania has  lauded   (ESRF) and CUTS international for the support in review process of  sustainable industrial development policy (SIDP).

This was said today in Dar es Salaam by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Adelhem Meru whose speech read by Sekela Mwasela, Ag. Director Regional Integrations, during the opening of 4th National Reference Group Meeting for the PACT- EAC project.

Sekela Mwasela, Ag. Director Regional Integrations from Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.

The one-day meeting was organized by Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) attracted more than 60 participants.

He said the (2010-2020) aims to achieve major investments in basic capital goods industries to ensure consolidation of industrial structures developed in the previous phases.

Over the years, implementation of SIDP has been aided by a number of policies, strategies and plans including the Tanzania Integrated Industrial Development Strategy 2025.

Others are long term perspective plan and its respective five year development plans, agricultural, trade and SMEs development policies.

He said they at the Ministry acknowledge the need for the revised policy to recognize the unique aspects and importance of harmonizing industrialization and agro processing.

"In doing so, the county will have an industrial policy that takes into account the climate- vulnerability of the different sectors, prioritizing the industries that are affected by climate negative impacts," he said .

He said there are no doubt that industrialization has been well integrated in national development frameworks.

Although there are opinions that impact climate change, food security and trade in agro processing and manufacturing are often left out during planning and implementation of development programs.

Dr Meru said in 2010 his Ministry formed  an integrated industrial development strategy  2025 (IIDS) to enhance SIDP implementation as well as responding to the need for a dynamic strategy in line with changing in  social –economic environment to guide  the process of resource –based industrialization.

According to him , the strategy identified  six sub sectors as priority sub sectors and agro processing being in the list due to its  tremendous importance  it has in  terms of employment creation and income generation, thus providing access to food and other necessities to  large  group of population.

On his part, the ESRF Assistant Research Fellow Solomon Baregu, said they have decided to launch sensitization campaign on the National Sustainable Industrial Development Policy (1996-2020).

He said the campaign aimed to influence the Government to review the National Sustainable Industrial Development Policy for it to include adequate strategies that Promote Climate Aware, Trade Driven and Food Security-enhancing Agro-processing.

This advocacy action strategy aims to set out the objectives of the selected advocacy campaign and how it will be pursued until June 2018.

“Through advocacy activities, the campaign will try to convince key decision makers to take specific actions that would contribute to the policy change we want to achieve”, he said
