Tobacco farmers in the country have something to smile after the leading tobacco buying company – Philip Morris Tanzania Ltd decision to construct a factory in the country. Philip Morris has for the past been buying over 34 percent of all tobacco grown in the county.

The factory will be constructed in Kingolwira area within Morogoro Municipal.

Speaking during the laying foundation of the factory construction, the Uhuru torch leader Amour Hamad Amour said he was happy to see one of the international companies coming to invest in Tanzania which clear shows that our country has a good policy for investors.

“I have been informed that Philip Morris has been leading buyer of tobacco in our country and now you have decided to construct your own factory here in Morogoro” he said.

He added: “I congratulate in supporting the government initiative of industrialization. But also the government for long has been calling investors to invest in industries in the country instead of buying and exporting raw materials something will benefit our farmers.”

This is a very big support for the government and also to our economy, said Amour adding that Morogoro for a long time has been one of the regions in the country with highest number of industries, he observed.

He further said that the government has been doing a lot in support the farmers and the good evidence is on the current budget of which all unnecessary taxes and levies have been scrapped.

“Investor like Philip Morris who are coming to invest in agriculture sector are highly encouraged as it send signs that our farmers will get markets of the agricultural produces and increase their revenue,” he said.

He noted: “I call upon our farmers to increase tobacco growing as we have a ready market here. ‘Take this advantage and change your living standards,’ said Amour who called for workers who will get employment from the factory to work hard as this will continue impressing other investors.”

When an investor comes here and invests billion of shillings this means he has faith workers in the country. Its good to follow the laid working procedures in order to maintain the same faith. Also get to know that when you work hard and the company gains profits, you will be the first people to benefit as you will get good salaries which will improve your living standards, the Uhuru torch leader Amour Hamad insisted.

Philip Morris Tanzania Ltd Corporate Affairs Director Evans Mlelwa said the decision by his firm to construct a factory in the country is as a result of good business environment, economy growth and good industrialization policy within the government.

Mlelwa underscored that the completion of this factory will increase both central government and local government revenue like city service levy and value added tax (VAT) among others.

“In addition farmers will benefit as they will increase tobacco growing and we will over many jobs in different sections like production and distribution,” he said.
