It has been learnt that the African National Congress has given South African President Jacob Zuma an ultimatum to step down as head of state before the end of Tuesday.
The party’s secretary general Ace Magushule delivered President Zuma’s recall later to the presidential residence on Tuesday morning after the party’s National Executive Committee which is the highest decision-making body decided after a marathon meeting that he should go.
Reliable sources have revealed that the balance of forces in the governing body had shifted “overwhelmingly against President Zuma and there was little sympathy for his perceived defiance of the ANC.
"Zuma is very emotional. He is speaking through the heart now. He is angry," an inside source with knowledge of the discussions with Zuma said.
The ANC is scheduled to announce its decision to recall Zuma at 14:00.
