Tanzania President Dr John Magufuli has urged the newly appointed Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Ms Anna Elisha Mghwira, to deploy her efforts, experience and creativity in addressing challenges facing the people, across political, religious and tribal affiliations.
Speaking shortly after swearing-in the newly appointed RC at the State House in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Dr Magufuli assured the National Chairperson of opposition party ACT-Wazalendo, of full government support in discharging her responsibilities.
Against the backdrop of the swearing-in ceremony is her party’s Central Committee meeting scheduled for today, to discuss how she would double as the chairperson and RC.
Ms Mghwira was appointed by President Magufuli on June 3, this year, replacing Mr Meck Sadick who resigned from the position last month, attributing the decision to old age and long public service. “I decided to appoint you because of your competence; I am confident that you are capable of serving the people of Kilimanjaro effectively. No-one should hold you back,” Dr Magufuli remarked.
He told her to be wary of some individuals in both the ruling party and the opposition camp who may have been upset by her appointment and thus not wish her well.
The President hinted that some people within CCM and Chadema had canvassed for the position, but he had turned them down. “I don’t just appoint anyone but only those I believe can serve the people effectively,” he remarked emphatically.
Ms Mghwira thanked the president for the trust he had bestowed on her through the appointment.
“The responsibility of a regional commissioner is to foster development in a specific area; I don’t think any party is against the country’s development of the country,” the soft-spoken politician remarked.
