Arsenal transfer news: Unai Emery says Sokratis Papastathopoulos will be his first signing
ARSENAL manager Unai Emery reportedly expects Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos to be his first signing of the transfer window.
The former PSG boss, who left the Parc des Princes after two mixed years in Ligue 1, is now primed to splash the cash this summer.
Arsenal know they must overhaul their squad if they are to challenge the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham for silverware next term.
Reports have claimed Juventus hero Stephan Lichtsteiner is set to be Emery’s first signing.
However, the Daily Mail say Sokratis is set to move first.
How likely is Unai Emery to swoop for some of the hottest names in football?
Arsenal’s defence has been plagued by problems in recent years, with Wenger failing to get the best from his players.
Emery seems to consider that area a problematic one given the Gunners’ failure to challenge for trophies.
Sokratis could provide some much-needed solidarity having been a huge hit at Dortmund.
And the Daily Mail say he is likely to be strutting his stuff for Arsenal next season.
It is also claimed the north London giants have asked about Freiburg ace Caglar Soyunu.

But the Bundesliga side want £30million to let the player go - something Emery is unwilling to pay.
As well as their defence, Arsenal are expected to sign a new goalkeeper.
Bernd Leno, who plays for Bayer Leverkusen, is the favourite to challenge Petr Cech for the club’s No 1 spot.
A midfielder is also on Emery’s radar with PSG’s Adrien Rabiot and Nice’s Jean Seri both being linked.
