CHELSEA have failed this season because they are missing John Terry and Diego Costa.

That is the opinion of former Liverpool star and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.

The Blues stormed to a Premier League crown last season in Antonio Conte’s debut season.

Both Terry and Costa were pivotal in the title run, on and off the pitch.

Spanish striker Costa scored 20 times, including game-winning goals against Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and West Brom.

Long-serving captain Terry, despite with limited game-time, was an influential member of the dressing room, keeping everyone focussed on their tasks.

Both stars left last summer, with Terry joining Aston Villa and Costa rejoining Atletico Madrid.

And Conte’s men have suffered much more this term, sitting perilously in fourth in the Premier League.

The Italian manager is under huge pressure this year, with many reports suggesting the former Juventus boss will be axed at the end of the season.

And, speaking earlier this week on Monday Night Football, Carragher claimed the loss of the two influential figures has had a big impact on the Stamford Bridge club.

“There’s no doubt they lost something with captain John Terry going, with what he was like around the training ground and in the dressing room, and of course they miss Costa,” he said.

“There are few strikers who can do what he does.

“However, while people say Conte could have managed that situation better, Costa caused a lot of problems and it will have been difficult for the manager to forget about him not wanting to play in a title run-in.

“If you’re in Conte’s position, you’re not going to accept that. It’s then up to you to replace him with quality.”

Chelsea face Hull in the FA Cup later today before hosting Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
