Cristiano Ronaldo wants to be reunited with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United - according to Fabio Capello.
And the Real Madrid striker’s mother has also confirmed she wants to see her son back at Old Trafford.
Former Real and England manager Capello is convinced Ronaldo has set his heart on a move to United, where he won three titles and the Champions League before his world record £80m switch to the Bernabeu in 2009.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been desperate to sign the five-time Ballon d’Or winner ever since taking over the club’s transfer strategy five years ago.
But despite frequent flirtations, Ronaldo has remained in the Spanish capital - inspiring Real to four Champions League crowns.
Now Capello insists the Portuguese international wants to work with Mourinho again - after the pair won the title together at Real in 2012.
“Cristiano wants to return to Manchester United alongside Mourinho,” the Italian told Sky Sport 24.
“I think he will eventually leave Madrid to go back to England. When? This I don’t know.”
Ronaldo threw his own future into doubt with cryptic comments following Real’s third straight Champions League triumph against Liverpool last weekend.
He said: “In the next few days I will give an answer to the fans that have always been on my side.
“It was very nice to be at Real Madrid, in the coming days I will talk about it more.”
The 33-year-old is said to have been left devastated by Zinedine Zidane’s shock decision to resign on Thursday.
He posted a message on Instagram saying: “All I feel is pride at having been your player.
“Coach, thanks for so much.”
Only a small number of clubs would be able to meet the financial package required to sign Ronaldo, with Paris St Germain and United among them.
And in an interview with French TV, Ronaldo’s mother Dolores Aveiro revealed a return to United would be her preferred destination for her son.
“I like Paris,” she said.
“I come every now and again. The last time was when my son received the Ballon d’Or.
“It was a great honour. when I arrived I was treated well by everyone.
“Convince Cristiano to sign for PSG? To be honest, it wouldn’t annoy me, but I would prefer him to return to Manchester United.”
