ELEVEN countries are expected to take part in this year’s Africa Zone 5 youth championship in Dar es Salaam next month, Athletics Tanzania (AT) disclosed.

Africa Zone 5 youth athletics competition' AT secretary general, Wilhelm Gidabuday, said the championship, slated for May 4-5, will be held at the National Stadium.

The AT official mentioned the countries as South Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zanzibar and hosts Tanzania Mainland.

He said AT has selected 23 athletes to form the national team, with the squad having started camping at Filbert Bayi Secondary School in Kibaha, Coast Region, yesterday.

“We have selected 23 athletes who will undergo a two-week intensive training at Filbert Bayi Secondary School. We aim at seeing to it that our athletes emerge as winners in all categories,” he said.

Gidabuday stopped short of unveiling the team’s coaching panel of the team, saying there are some logistics which have to be followed before mentioning the coaches.

He, nevertheless, hinted that one of the coaches will be chairman of Coast Region Athletics Association, Robert Kalyahe.

He said AT has selected Kalyahe as one of the team’s coaches due to the latter’s vast experience in training developmental teams. The coach is also close to Filbert Bayi Secondary School.

Gidabuday hailed Filbert Bayi and Makongo secondary schools for contributing many athletes to the team.

“The camp has 12 boys and 11 girls but almost half of them are from Makongo and Filbert Bayi secondary schools,” he said.

“We really appreciate the two schools for producing many athletes for the national team. Other athletes are from Arusha, Singida, Tanga, Morogoro and Simiyu
