Full Time: Argentina 1-1 Iceland- Lionel Messi shows nothing

90: The fourth official says we will have an extra FIVE MINUTES still to play at the end of the second half.

89: SUB! Iceland swap Finnbogason with Sigurdarson for the closing stages.

88: SAVE! And now Mascherano tests Halldorsson with a low shot from the edge of the box.

87: WHAT A SAVE! Halldorsson shows brilliant reactions to keep out Pavon's cross-cum-shot.

84: SUB! Argentina now bring on Higuain for Meza as a last throw of the dice.

81: CLOSE! Messi twists and turns some 25 yards from goal, before the playmaker curls a delightful effort inches past the left-hand post.

80: There has been some truly heroic Iceland defending in this second half, but they still have 10 minutes left to go to get what would be a famous draw.

77: NO PENALTY! Pavon's driving run takes him to the left-hand byline and the sub goes over in the box, but the referee says no penalty judging that Saevarsson had got the ball. But he has not gone to VAR interestingly...

76: SUBS! Pavon comes on for Di Maria, while Gunnarsson is replaced by Skulason.

75: It is hard for Iceland at the moment as they really have very options in attack whenever they do finally get the ball back.

73: However, Messi's effort is disappointing and goes straight into the wall.

72: Meza is fouled on the edge of the box to hand Argentina a free kick in a very dangerous situation, and guess who is standing over the ball......

71: SHOT! Messi skips his way past a couple of Iceland defenders, before finding Banega to his left, But the sub's effort is straight down Halldorsson's throat.

69: Midway through the second half, which has been dominated by Argentina, but they are still looking for that crucial goal to go back ahead.

65: SHOT! A chance for redemption for Messi, who stand over a free kick on the right edge of the box, but his effort sails just over the bar.

64: PENALTY SAVED! Wow, Messi's spot kick is turned away by Halldorsson...

63: PENALTY TO ARGENTINA! Magnusson has just pushed Meza in the back in the box and that is a penalty...

62: A worry for Iceland with Berg Gudmundsson currently receiving treatment, who has had to leave the pitch to be look at...

60: An hour gone then in Moscow and it is a real case of backs against the walls as far as Iceland are concerned.

23 - Alfred Finnbogason's goal (22:49) was the earliest scored for a nation playing in their first World Cup game since Rashidi Yekini scored after 21 minutes for Nigeria vs Bulgaria on June 21st 1994. Impact.

4:46 PM - Jun 16, 2018

56: Messi goes past four Iceland players in a tight space on the edge of the box, but the ball gets smuggled behind for another corner. But again, Iceland's defence hold firm, for now...

54: SUB! The first change of the game sees Banega replace Biglia.

52: Driving run into the box by Messi is ended by a brilliant, well-timed tackle by an Iceland defender.

50: Sigurdsson gets free to the left byline, but his pull back is blocked for a corner. However, Caballero does well to come and punch the ball clear.

48: CHANCE! Driving run by Di Maria earns his side the first corner of the second half and the PSG winger curls the ball in from the left straight on to Otamendi's head, but his effort flies over the bar.

46: OK we are back underway again in Moscow...

Great game so far - but more goals please!

Aguero to score the next goal is out to 4/1 while both teams to score in the second half is now 3/1.

46: OK we are back underway again in Moscow...

Great game so far - but more goals please!

Aguero to score the next goal is out to 4/1 while both teams to score in the second half is now 3/1.

HT: That is the half-time whistle then and boy has that firsat 45 minutes flown by here in the Russian capital - it is all square at the break after Finnbogason's effort had cancelled out Aguero's opener.

Do not go anywhere though as this should be a cracking second period...

45: There will be one extra minute to play at the end of the first half as that man Sigurdsson flashes a shot just past the left-hand post.

45: SAVE! Great stop by Caballero who gets a strong hand to keep out Sigurdsson's low drive.

42: NO PENALTY! Again, VAR is called into action to check a possible handball against Sigurdsson, who stopped Salvio's cross with his hand, but it was accidental. And the subsequent right-wing corner is again easily dealt with by Iceland.

40: NO PENALTY! Argentine shouts for a penalty as Biglia goes down in the box, and after that is checked by VAR, the referee allows the resulting corner to be taken, but it is straight into Halldorsson's hands.

38: I have to say Iceland's back line are so well regimented that it is not that easy at all trying to create any clear-cut openings against them.

36: It has been all Argentina since Iceland equalised as the South Americans look to retake the lead before the break.

34: Otamendi's lofted ball over the top tries to pick out Meza's clever run into the box, but the pass just has too much on it.

32: SHOT! Biglia picks up possession some 30 yards out, but the midfielder's curler sails harmlessly over the bar.

30: Iceland captain Arnason goes over in the middle of the park and it turns out that it was referee Marciniak who had accidentally stepped on his foot!!

28: Cracking start to proceedings here in the Russian capital, and this game is promising more goals...

25: Di Maria's quick feet near the left-hand byline earns his side a corner, from which Otamendi's looping header is easily saved by Halldorsson.

GOAL! ARGENTINA 1-1 ICELAND (Finnbogason, 23)

Wow, game on as after a mad scramble in the box, the ball drops to the unmarked Sigurdsson at the far post. The forward's low driven shot then falls nicely at Finnbogason's feet and the Augsburg striker taps home from close range.

21: SAVE! Messi now tests Halldorsson with a snapshot that the Iceland No 1 does well to gather at his near post.

Argentina deservedly lead as Rojo's mishit shot from distance falls straight at Aguero's feet in the box. And the Man City striker then turns on a six [pence, before firing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net for his first World Cup goal at his third tournament.

17: SHOT! Iceland are just struggling now to get out of their own half, with wave after wave of Argentina attacks coming their way as Messi now tries his luck from 25 yards out with a shot that stings Halldorsson's palms.

15: The opening quarter of an hour has just flown by such has been the frenetic nature of this contest so far.

13: SHOT! Otamendi tries his luck from fully 40 yards out and predictably the defender's shot is still rising now!

12: First corner of the game goes Argentina's way after a good run down the left by Di Maria, but the PSG winger's delivery in is poor and Iceland clear their lines.

9: CLOSE! Iceland should be ahead, only for Bjarnason to side-foot wide of the gaping goal after Argentina carelessly give away possession just outside their area.

9: CHANCE! Finnbogason comes close to open the scoring with a well-struck effort from a tight angle.

8: CLOSE! Another Argentina free kick after another foul on Messi, who gets up to take the resulting set play and Tagliafico's clever back header is inches away from finding the net.

6: A really fast start to proceedings here in Moscow as now Gunnarsson chops down Messi in the middle of the park.

4: OK, we have our first VAR of the game as the referee checks for a potential red-card offence against Hallfredsson, but Mr Marciniak has let Argentina take the free kick. And the inswinging ball into the box causes a brief moment of panic in the Iceland defence, before the ball drops nicely at Halldorsson's feet.

3: Argentina have started this contest in impressive form, stroking the ball around nicely and confidently in the mid-afternoon Moscow sun.

1: OK we are off in Moscow, with Iceland getting the game underway playing from right to left in the first half.

While some have been put off travelling to Russia, Iceland's famous supporters are planning to take their first-ever World Cup by storm...

Argentina have gone past the first round in 11 of their last 12 World Cup appearances, the only exception coming in 2002. In fact, they have won 12 of their last 15 group games at the World Cup (D2 L1), their only defeat in that run coming against England in 2002 (0-1)

After scraping through World Cup qualification and embarrassing friendly defeats to Nigeria and Spain, what are the expectations for Argentina for the upcoming tournament in Russia?

I have gone for Argentina to beat Iceland. We all remember Iceland from when they beat us at the last Euros, but they are not that good a team and the next game they got destroyed by France. Meanwhile, Argentina will be good going forward, although I do worry about them at the back, but I expect them to win this one.

Who will come out on top in the striking stakes between Sergio Aguero and Gylfi Sigurdsson?

This afternoon's all-important referee is Szymon Marciniak from Poland by the way.

Argentina actually named their starting line-up on Friday, with manager Jorge Sampaoli opting to go with both Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero in attack.

So, it is good news for Iceland with key man Gylfi Sigurdsson starting after the Everton forward returned from a knee problem in a recent friendly with Ghana.

Team to play Argentina: Halldorsson, Saevarsson, Sigurdsson, Arnason, Magnusson, Gudmundsson, Bjarnason, Gunnarsson, Hallfredsson, Sigurdsson, Finnbogason

Subs: Schram, Runarsson, Ingason, Eyjolfsson, Skulason, Fridjonsson, Gudmundsson, Skulason, Traustason, Sigurdarson, Gislason, Bodvarsson

Teanm to play Iceland: Caballero, Tagliafico, Rojo, Otamendi, Salvio, Biglia, Di Maria, Meza, Mascherano, Messi, Aguero

Subs: Guzman, Armani, Mercado, Ansaldi, Fazio, Banega, Acuna, Perez, Lo Celso, Higuain, Dybala, Pavon

So last night saw Cristiano Ronaldo steal all the headlines, while today is the the turn of one Lionel Messi to show the world what he is made of...
