Live updates as Newcastle host Manchester United in the Premier League

Full TIMe: Newcastle 1-0 Manchester United

90+4 min Hayden replaces Perez, in the process wasting what little time remains.

90+3 min United win another corner, then another; for the first time, Newcastle look nervous. But a flying header from someone, Lascelles I think, elicits a glorious and throaty roar from the crowd.

90 min Let it not be forgotten that Newcastle’s goal came as a result of Chris Smalling diving.

88: Rash challenge from Valencia as he goes in with a high foot on Atsu around head height. Not a good tackle and very lucky to escape without a yellow card.

86: Newcastle have done a good job in the last five minutes of holding the ball better and keeping Manchester United away from their goal. The hosts are using every opportunity they can to run down the clock too.

85 min I think I forgot to note that McTominay replaced Matic. He’s young and deserves a chance, but so far it’s not been easy to detect that which makes him special.

81: Newcastle are finding spaces on the break but they are not making it count. Kenedy has just wasted an opportunity when he had players in support.

80 min Shelvey wins possession in centrefield with a thunderous challenge - the crowd love it - but Kenedy makes a mess of things when presented with possession.

77: BLOCK! Wow. How has Martial not scored?

He has two attempts from inside the six-yard box as a corner falls down to him but both are blocked on the line.

Newcastle just about hold on.

76: A rare chance for Manchester United to counter and they almost make it count as Lukaku clips into the middle of the six-yard box, but Lejeune does well to nod it behind.

70: It's been all Manchester United since the goal. Newcastle are without a win in their last eight home games. This is a big 20 minutes for the hosts.

68 min Young finds space down the left of the box and Lukaku pulls away alongside him asking for a square pass. But Young opts to go alone, shmicing a low shot which Dubravka, who’s been very good, parries away and behind. the corner comes to nowt.

GOAL! Newcastle United 1-0 Manchester United (Ritchie)

The free-kick is punted towards the back post where Pogba opts to do nothing whatsoever, allowing Lejeune to nod down. Gayle does brilliantly to keep the ball alive, flicking it into the path of Ritchie, all alone as the chasm appears in the middle of the box, and he smacks a low shot, left-footed into the far corner!

64: First yellow card of the game is shown to Smalling for a dive.

58: Dubravka took a knock as he tried to get that through ball from Lukaku, but he seems to be fine. He's had a good game so far.

57: MISS! An open goal for Sanchez to aim at, and he doesn't finish.

Lukaku splits the Newcastle defence with an excellent pass and Sanchez's first touch takes him around Dubravka and leaves him with an open goal to aim at. But Sanchez steadies himself rather than shoot first time and when he does pull the trigger he finds Lejeune in the way.

55: CLOSE! Brilliant footwork from Sanchez as he dances away from two or three tackles in the box, cuts inside and then shoots...but it's deflected into the side-netting.

53: Valencia clips into the box, Smalling climbs and nods across for Lukaku to head into the back of the net...but it won't stand as Smalling was penalised for his challenge when he went up win the ball.

51: Another pass from Newcastle splits the defence, with Ritchie this time clipping over the top for Shelvey, who can't quite stretch and flick past De Gea.

Shelvey and Ritchie are having good games.

49: Super ball from Shelvey through the middle of the Manchester United defence for Ritchie but the flag goes up for offside. Very tight call but looked to be the right one.

47: Young carries down the left, drives past Yedlin and gets in a low cross towards Martial. He opts not to shoot first time from 12 yards out and instead takes a touch, which takes him into two Newcastle players.

Perhaps a first-time shot would have been the better option.

No changes at the break and Manchester United get the game restarted.

And that is half-time.

45: Just one minute to be added on.

44: Manchester United have looked the more threatening side but Newcastle have had their moments. They have also managed to get back into the game after it looked like the visitors might take control.

42: Clumsy from Yedlin as he gets his arms around Lingard and brings him down. Lucky not to be booked.

40 min Gayle beats Smalling to the ball on the left corner of the box and Smalling lunges anyway, sending Gayle sprawling. That’s a penalty, but the ref sees nothing.

37 min Gayle chases into the corner after a long ball, at which Jones leaps and gurns. He gets a touch, holds his arm up in acknowledgement, and the ref gives a goalkick to Benitez’s consternation.

36: SAVE! Dubravka to the rescue.

First clear chance of the match as Matic slides a perfectly-weighted pass through for Martial. He is in one-on-one with the goalkeeper but Dubravka comes out on top as he sticks out a leg to save.

33 min Back come United, Sanchez again to the fore, wriggling space for Lingard to dig out a low shot which Dubranka slumps upon down by his near post.

32: SAVE! Lukaku and Sanchez link up well. Sanchez slips it on the outside for Lingard, who shoots towards the bottom corner and Dubravka has to get down to palm it away.

30: Kenedy goes for goal from distance and strikes it well, but it's straight down the middle at De Gea.

29: Shelvey fizzes it into the feet of Ritchie on the right corner of the box. He controls well but then shoots way over the bar.

26: The last 10 minutes have been all Manchester United, with Sanchez the standout player. They are just lacking the final pass at the moment though.

24: Almost slipped through for Sanchez, but the pass from Martial is overhit and just beyond the Chilean, who had made a clever run down the side.

22: Manchester United have had much more of the possession in the last five minutes or so and Newcastle are having to do more work in their own half.

20: Don't want to jinx him but Dubravka has looked quite assured on his debut. He hasn't been afraid to come out of his box and win balls over the top.

17: Better from Manchester United. Again Sanchez is involved as he does well to hold off a challenge from Yedlin, get into the box and cut back for Lukaku, whose first-time shot is scuffed and blocked.

Manchester United starting to get a foothold in the game.

15: Good play from the visitors as Sanchez collects on the left touchline and plays a clever pass into the box for the run of Martial. He looks to cut across goal for Lukaku but it doesn't reach the striker.

14: Our reporter Geoff Shreeves is close to the dugout and has seen Pogba give a thumbs-up to Mourinho and tell him he is OK. He seems to be limping slightly though.

10: Newcastle are doing a good job of pressing the visitors and not allowing them time on the ball. The hosts have had 58% of the possession.

7 min United are playing a triangle in midfield, reckons Gary Neville, with Matic at its base and Pogba and Lingard in front. That’s not that different from at Spurs, and still liable to be swamped against quality opposition.

7: SHOT! Decent start by Newcastle. They win the ball high up the pitch and Perez lashes a shot wide from around 20 yards.

De Gea denies Shelvey!

5 mins: Dwight Gayle takes the free-kick and goes low, but it's poor and hits the legs of the wall but re-bounds out to the edge of the 'D' where Jonjo Shelvey is waiting.

The former Liverpool midfielder drives his shot, powerfully at goal but David De Gea is equal to it, lifting his hands to push away. Good effort.

4; Newcastle won free kick

3: Martial is looking a little dazed, he might have got a finger in the eye from Diame.

He's back on the pitch though and fine to continue.

2: Good tackle by Diame in midfield on Martial, who goes down clutching his face. No free-kick given but Diame did catch him with his arm.

And we are off. Newcastle get the game started

Newcastle have won two of their last 28 Premier League games against Man Utd (D7 L19), failing to win any of their last six (D2 L4).

Just seeing some shots of Pogba looking like he tweaked something during the warm-ups. Will keep an eye on that.
