LIONEL MESSI claims he has no relationship with Real Madrid counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Barcelona forward has enjoyed a lengthy rivalry with the Portuguese star for the crown of best player in world football.
Both Messi and Ronaldo have five prestigious Ballon d'Or honours to their name.
But however similar the duo are on the pitch, Messi insists the pair have nothing in common off the field.
"Friendship is built through spending time together and getting to know each other," he told World Soccer Magazine.
"We have no relationship, mainly because we only see each other at awards ceremonies, and that's the only time we speak.
"Everything is fine, but our lives don't cross very often."
Speaking to TyC Sports recently, former Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria gave his thoughts on the duo.
"Messi is always the best, he's the best every year," he said.
"Cristiano Ronaldo's a special player, but Messi is from another planet.
"There are no words to describe Messi, he always surprises you."
Messi and Ronaldo are enduring contrasting fortunes this season.
Barcelona sit seven points clear at the top of La Liga.
Meanwhile, Madrid are trailing their rivals by 17 points.
Zinedine Zidane's men are in danger of failing to qualify for next season's Champions League and were recently dumped out of the Copa del Rey to lowly Leganes.
