Live / Cardiff City 0-5 Manchester City: Aguero celebrates new deal with goal in 300th game

Sergio Aguero scored on his 300th appearance for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's side bounced back from their midweek Champions League disappointment with a resounding 5-0 win at Cardiff City.

The club's all-time leading goalscorer, who signed a contract extension this week that will keep him at the club until 2021, opened the scoring after 32 minutes.

So often the star of the show, Aguero shared the spotlight on a rainy afternoon in South Wales with Bernardo Silva, who doubled City's lead three minutes later, and Ilkay Gundogan, who capped a fine performance with a brilliant solo effort.

Substitute Riyad Mahrez scored his first goals for the club with a brace to put the result beyond doubt, and the manner of the victory will have delighted Guardiola after a below-par showing in a 2-1 defeat to Lyon in midweek.

Cool and composed during a scrappy opening half an hour, Gundogan started the move that led to the opener, feeding Silva who squared to Aguero and the striker beat his marker to apply a first-time finish.

Silva got his head underneath Leroy Sane's cross from the right two minutes later and looped the ball up and over Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge and in at the far post.

Gundogan was the stand-out player in the first half and he was rewarded with the pick of the goals, playing a one-two with Raheem Sterling before confidently side-footing into the top corner.

City controlled the second half from start to finish and when Sterling set Gundogan free down the left, he sent a low cross to the feet of Mahrez to open his account for the club.

With one minute left to play, Bruno Ecuele Manga needed to make a simple clearance, but instead played the ball straight to Mahrez, who drove it low and hard into the bottom-left corner of the net to wrap up a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon for Guardiola.

What it means: Unbeaten champions keep the pressure on

City's dropped points against Wolves last month is what separates them from leaders Liverpool, who have a 100 per cent record, but being in the chasing pack can offer a psychological advantage – especially if your team is playing the way the champions did against Cardiff.

Gundogan burying the memory of World Cup nightmare

After being caught up Germany's torrid World Cup campaign, Gundogan has played himself back into form and his intelligent movement and exquisite touch were too much for Cardiff to handle, not to mention his superb goal.

Captain Morrison must steady the ship

Cardiff's wait for a first win of the season goes on and they have conceded 12 goals in their last three Premier League games. Bluebirds captain Sean Morrison might have been helpless to prevent Aguero and company in such fine form, but he must rally his troops and help Neil Warnock grind out some results soon.

What's next

There is no let up for Cardiff, who face fellow strugglers Burnley at home before travelling to Tottenham, while Manchester City can look forward to what should be another three points when they meet Brighton and Hove Albion at home after their EFL Cup clash with Oxford United.

Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.

Manchester City bounce back from their Champions League defeat with an emphatic victory over Cardiff City this afternoon. Sergio Aguero opened the scoring after an underwhelming start to the contest from Pep Guardiola's men. However, after the breakthrough it was all one-way traffic. Bernardo Silva added a second two minutes after Aguero's effort, while Ilkay Gundogan made it three with a stunner before half-time. Riyad Mahrez notched his first City goal after entering the action from the bench and he made it five with a strike to cap off the win just before full-time.

46' We're back underway at Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff were simply powerless to stop City when they get going in the final 15 minutes of the half. Neil Warnock's men were resilient in the early stages of the game, but lacked the threat on the counter to put the visitors under pressure. Once again the quality of a top Premier League outfit has punished Cardiff for the second week on the bounce.

After a slow start to the contest, Manchester City came to life after Sergio Aguero put them ahead and are surely on their way to securing the three points against Cardiff this afternoon. City were held in check for the opening 30 minutes, but a well crafted move between Ilkay Gunodgan and Bernardo Silva opened up space for Aguero to score. Silva doubled City's advantage, looping a header over Neil Etheridge into the net from Leroy Sane's cross. Just before half-time Gundogan unleashed a special strike from 20 yards, blasting his effort into the top corner.

45' + 2' HALF-TIME: CARDIFF 0-3 MANCHESTER CITY

44' Sterling provides an option for a one-two with Gundogan, teeing him up for the special strike.

44' GOALLLLLLL!!! GUNDOGAN SCORES A SCREAMER!!!! CITY HAVE THREE!!!! The German unleashes a spectacular strike from the edge of the box, blasting his effort into the top corner. Sane offloaded the ball to the midfielder, who then carved out space working a one-two with Sterling. The finish was a thing of beauty from the Gundogan, placing the ball beyond the reach of Etheridge.

44' Assist Raheem Shaquille Sterling

42' Fernandinho drops into space 25 yards from goal and he goes for the strike from distance, only to pull his effort harmlessly wide of the post.

41' SAVE! Sterling works his way through the Cardiff backline with pace and skill. He raids to the byline before cutting the ball back for Aguero to strike. The Argentine gets a shot away, but Etheridge makes a good low stop with his boot.

40' Sane makes a run to latch on to Gundogan's pass into the box. He twists and turns, but cannot find a way through. City recycle possession and Gundogan finds space at the back post, although he cannot pull the trigger. Aguero takes over, only to see his effort deflected behind for a corner.

38' City struggled in the opening 30 minutes of the contest, but out of nowhere have seized control of the contest.

36' SAVE! Ward finds space on the edge of the box and he goes for the strike. The forward gets power behind his strike, but Ederson watches it all the way to get down to make the stop.

35' GOALLLLLLLLLL!!!!! BERNARDO SILVA SCORES!!! CITY 2-0!!!! The visitors double their advantage within the space of three minutes. Sane was afforded space and time on the left flank after he played a short corner with Walker. He sent a cross with pace into the middle that Bernardo Silva flicked on. His effort looped towards the back post, over Etheridge into the back of the net. City have control now.

35' Assist Leroy Sané

34' City keep the pressure on the home side by winning a corner down the right flank...

32' GOALLLLLLLLL!!! AGUERO OUT OF NOWHERE!!! CITY LEAD 1-0!!!! The visitors put themselves ahead in the contest with a well-worked move in the final third converted by the Argentine. Gundogan and Bernardo Silva combined in the box, with the latter playing a low ball towards the penalty spot. Aguero made a move to get ahead of Morrison, firing his effort low and hard past Etheridge. A fine finish.

30' Hoilett releases the run of Reid down the right inside channel. The forward fires a low ball across the face of goal, but Otamendi acts in the middle to slide to clear behind for a Cardiff corner.

29' CHANCE! Gundogan should open the scoring. The German sends a cross into the box that is headed straight back to him by Morrison. Gundogan latches on the ball and goes for the strike on the half-volley from close range, but he guides his effort over the bar.

27' Aguero searches for space on the edge of the box. He stops then starts to surge into the area, but his attempted shot across the face is blocked by Ecuele Manga.

27' Aguero searches for space on the edge of the box. He stops then starts to surge into the area, but his attempted shot across the face is blocked by Ecuele Manga.

23' Sterling tries to force the ball towards Aguero in the middle, but Ecuele Manga makes the interception before Hoilett carries the ball away from danger.

22' If Guardiola was looking for a response from his team following their defeat during the week, he has not seen it yet. They've been passive in possession in the opening 20 minutes.

20' Camarasa loses out on the edge of his own box. City pounce as Aguero feeds Sane, but the home side are quick to surround the winger to win a goal-kick as he misplaces his offload.

19' As expected City are enjoying a lot of possession, but they've been unable to carve out a clear-cut opening to test Etheridge thus far.

17' Ederson almost releases the run of Aguero in the final third with a simple clearance. The ball just bounces away from the Argentine into the hands of Etheridge, but there was a threat there.

15' Cardiff sustain a meaningful attack down the flanks, but first Reid then Cunningham are unable to supply a quality delivery into the box from the wide areas.

14' City pressure the home side into a mistake in their own half and the ball breaks for Sane. The German has space and time, but he overhits his delivery into the box.

12' CLOSE! Aguero beats two challenges to raid down the right flank. He fires the ball low towards the near post for Gundogan, who makes skimming contact, but the ball bounces just wide of the post.

10' Laporte puts Ederson under all sorts of pressure by overhitting his backpass to the keeper. Ederson brilliantly to control before hammering downfield away from danger. The Brazilian was cool under duress there.

8' City probe and Sterling makes a good run into the right inside channel to latch on to Bernardo Silva's throughball. He keeps the ball alive on the byline with a low cross, forcing Ecuele Manga to clear into touch.

7' Camarasa surges down the right and gets half a yard on Delph to hit a cross deep to the back post. However, it sails over the head of Reid and the visitors are able to clear the danger.

6' Ward gets the better of Otamendi down the left flank, robbing the defender of possession. He drives to the edge of the box, but gets crowded out before he can offload to Reid.

5' City are attempting to establish a rhythm to their play, although the wet conditons will make life difficult.

3' City waste the resulting corner as Sterling collects on the left flank, only to overhit his cross into the middle.

2' Sane breaks down the flank and he gets away from Peltier, but Camarasa is there to divert his attempted cross behind for a corner.

1' Sane bursts down the left and he goes for an early cross into the box, but Etheridge gathers the ball with ease.

1' We're underway in Cardiff.
