Liverpool must replicate Virgil van Dijk deal to sign Alisson - but time is running out

Liverpool have been urged to sign Roma goalkeeper Alisson at all costs - just like they did for Virgil van Dijk.

And time might be of the essence with the 25-year-old set to star for Brazil in this month's World Cup.

The Brazilian stopper is on the Reds' wishlist as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping options.

The club heavily scouted the Brazilian international in recent months but had initially backed away from a deal after being put off by Roma's price tag.

Reports have indicated that Liverpool could come back to the table for Alisson after Loris Karius' horror display in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, but Monchi says that the Serie A club have received no bids yet.

But former defender Steve Nicol believes Liverpool must do all they can to bring the South American to Anfield, similar to their pursuit of Van Dijk when they would eventually part with £75million.

Speaking on ESPN, the Scot said: "We sat here and mulled over the price tag for Van Dijk - did Van Dijk make a difference? My goodness did he make a difference. This team was transformed with Van Dijk in it.

“So imagine what would happen if they got Alisson. If you want to go for the big prizes you need to have good players and good players cost money.

“But you know what? Liverpool have the money. If you’ve got it, you spend it tomorrow, or in 10 minutes’ time, if you’ve got the opportunity.

“Do you buy two average players or one great player? You buy the great player.”

Alisson will be his country's no.1 in Russia this summer, with his performances already reportedly alerting the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid to his ability too.

And Nicol's ESPN colleague, former Venezuela international Alejandro Moreno, thinks Liverpool must act quickly to avoid a bidding war after the World Cup.

"If you’re sure that Alisson is your guy and Liverpool are sure this is the guy you want to go after, you better go after him quickly," Moreno said.

“If this guy has a good World Cup with Brazil then maybe others come into play and say, ‘You know what, we want a piece of that too’ and that only raises the price.

“If you’re sure that this is your guy, commit to it and make a decision prior to the World Cup.”
