MANCHESTER UNITED missed out on signing Antoine Griezmann in the summer because the Glazer family forced Jose Mourinho to choose between the Atletico Madrid star and Romelu Lukaku.
Manchester United appeared set to sign Griezmann from Atletico in the summer after agreeing a fee with the La Liga giants.
However, the club’s transfer ban saw the player stay put with Griezmann going on to sign a new contract at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Many believed it was that ban that prompted Griezmann to stay put.
But the Manchester Evening News say the Glazers forced Mourinho to choose between the Frenchman and Lukaku.
Manchester United sent shockwaves through the footballing world when they splurged £75m on Lukaku, despite the Belgian initially appearing set to join Chelsea.
The Red Devils were also locked in talks with Real Madrid for Alvaro Morata at the time.
But the MEN say Mourinho chose Lukaku over Griezmann because he wanted a natural no9.
At the time, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sidelined through injury and his career was in limbo.
Even now, a couple of months after returning, there is no guarantee the 36-year-old will be at Old Trafford for the long term.
Meanwhile, Griezmann recently hinted he would be open to joining United despite missing out on a move back in the summer.
"I haven't made that decision,” he said in his biography.
“It all depends on various factors. I have nothing against England except for the weather. Manchester United is a possibility.
"As much as I repeat that I am delighted at Atletico, I have a great coach and great team-mates, they regularly ask me about my future. I do not exclude anything."
United will have to fend off Barcelona if they are to land the 26-year-old.
