Man Utd news: Transfer window shambles proves board do not trust Jose Mourinho - pundit

MANCHESTER UNITED's top brass do not trust Jose Mourinho’s judgement when it comes to signing players.

Jose Mourinho

Mourinho didn't get the players he wanted to strengthen his side's defence

That’s the verdict of former Arsenal star turned talkSPORT pundit Perry Groves.

United’s transfer window ended with a whimper rather than a bang as they failed to bring in any players on deadline day.

Mourinho wanted a central defender, primarily Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld or Yerry Mina, to bolster his defensive options.

But Chief Executive Ed Woodward refused to release the funds to sign any of their targets.

Groves believes the signings didn’t happen because the United board have lost faith in the manager’s eye for a player.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the former Gunners star said: “They don’t trust Jose Mourinho’s judgement on players.

“When have you heard Manchester United say, ‘oh no, we’re not buying him because he hasn’t got a sell-on fee’?

“I can’t remember them doing that with Robin van Persie when he was 30, and Sir Alex Ferguson said, ‘we need him, doesn’t matter if it’s one or two seasons, he’ll win us the league’, which he did.

“They had a chance to sign Yerry Mina, but then Man United said, ‘oh, we’re not paying the extortionate agent’s fees’.

“But they didn’t say that about Paul Pogba with Mino Raiola – they didn’t worry about paying him a fortune in agent’s fees!

“There’s an even bigger chasm now between Ed Woodward and Mourinho.”

The Red Devils won their first game of the season last night with a 2-1 victory over Leicester at Old Trafford.

A penalty from Paul Pogba was followed by Luke Shaw’s first goal of his senior career before Jamie Vardy’s late consolation.

During pre-season, Mourinho intimated that he felt his squad was not deep enough.

“I would like to have two more players,” he said after the arrival of Fred, Diego Dalot and Lee Grant.

“I think I am not going to get two. I think that it’s possible I will have one.

“And that one, I gave a list to my club of five names a few months ago.

“And I wait to see if it’s possible to have one of these players.”
