Manchester United get triple improvement ahead of Liverpool clash

Manchester United return to Premier League action in their fixture against Liverpool this weekend and Jose Mourinho has received some good news.

David de Gea was rested for Spain's World Cup qualifier against Israel ahead of Manchester United's weekend trip to Liverpool.

United manager Jose Mourinho watched Marouane Fellaini succumb to injury on Belgium duty last week despite hoping coach Roberto Martinez would not risk the midfielder, who had missed the recent win over CSKA Moscow.

Belgium had already qualified for the World Cup and Fellaini's needless appearance has ruled him out for at least two weeks but Spain coach Julen Lopetegui dropped first-choice De Gea for Pepe Reina in Jerusalem. Spain secured their spot at next year's finals in Russia last month.

Another United player who will be travelling east is Nemanja Matic. The 29-year-old came through Serbia's win over Georgia unscathed as they qualified for the World Cup by topping Group D ahead of the Republic of Ireland and Wales. Matic broke down in tears after the victory and Serbia will compete at their first major tournament since the 2010 World Cup in Russia.

De Gea and Matic are expected to start for United at Anfield while Darmian could make the bench. Ashley Young could continue at left-back, having performed so well there in the Premier League wins over Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace last month.

De Gea's compatriots Ander Herrera and Juan Mata are fresh after they were overlooked for the Spain squad again, Anthony Martial also missed out on Didier Deschamps' France party and Eric Bailly only had one outing during the international fortnight with the Ivory Coast in Mali last week.

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard were the only United players to turn out for England over the last week and Romelu Lukaku could figure for Belgium tonight after he missed last week's win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Antonio Valencia and Sergio Romero will come face-to-face during Argentina's pivotal qualifier in Ecuador on Tuesday evening.
