Paul Pogba is in line to return to the Manchester United squad this weekend against Chelsea after stepping up his recovery in training, according to reports.
The Frenchman has not played for the Red Devils since injuring his hamstring against Basel in the middle of September, causing him to miss 10 further games across all competitions.
But now The Sun claim Pogba is looking ‘good and sharp’ in training, impressing the club’s fitness staff, and could be back for in the matchday squad for the trip to Stamford Bridge.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Mourinho refused to confirm any injury or team news ahead of facing Chelsea.
Mourinho was non-committal when asked about the fitness of his squad ‘I have to wait a little bit,’ he said on Thursday, with his media duties brought forward so he can attend a court hearing in Madrid on Friday.
‘Normally my press conference is a little later in the week, we still have Friday and Saturday. I’m not very optimistic, but I don’t want to lie.
Pogba pulled up in the Champions League group match against Basel . ‘I don’t want you to say that I lie when I told you no chance of recovery, so I prefer just to say two more days to confirm my expectation.’ Pressed further on the state of his squad, he made a 50/50 motion with his hand and added: ‘We are there. I think next two days will be important for that decision.’ Ibrahimovic is also thought to be nearing a return to fitness, though January is a realistic return date.
Pogba’s return will be a welcome boost for United, who have been without the likes of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera in midfield.
Even if he is not fit in time to face Chelsea on Sunday, that match is followed by a two-week international break after which the Frenchman should be recovered enough to return to action.
