Revealed: Why Arsenal withdrew their contract offer to Aaron Ramsey and Liverpool FC are now favourites to sign him

Arsenal have withdrawn their contract offer to Wales star Aaron Ramsey because they are not involved in the Champions League, according to reports on Sunday.

The Gunners have missed out on qualifying for the elite European competition for the past two seasons, and financially that means there is a need to balance the books at the Emirates.

The Mail claim that Ramsey appears to be paying the price for that Euro failure.

A £200,000-a-week deal was reported to have on the table for Ramsey, but that has now been withdrawn, with Unai Emery looking at internal and cheaper external options to replace the Welshman report Wales Online .

Arsenal created a rod for their own back by giving Mesut Ozil a £350,000-a-week contract last season and shelling out £200,000 deals to newcomers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The loss of a Champions League windfall has had a direct bearing on the Ramsey contract situation, claim the reports.

Liverpool are now the frontrunners for Ramsey’s signature, with Jurgen Klopp having a bid for the Welshman knocked back over the summer.

It is understood that Ramsey would like the opportunity to work under the German.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Juventus and AC Milan all covet the former Bluebird, who, barring an incredible turnaround, will leave London after 10 years’ service.

The 27-year-old was hooked after the hour mark in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday, with Alex Iwobi coming on and changing the game for Emery.

He was visibly disappointed, shaking his head as he left the field with the game goalless.
