Tanzania’s Taifa Stars start 2019 AFCON qualifiers preps in Egypt

Tanzania’s senior national soccer team, Taifa Stars, arrived safely in Alexandria, Egypt yesterday to start their one-week training camp for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers' match against Lesotho.

The team left Dar es Salaam aboard Ethiopian Airlines at 04:45pm on Tuesday on their way to Egypt via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

A delegation of 30 people including team officials, technical bench and players under leadership of Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) official, Wilfred Kidao, arrived at the Cairo International Airport at 01:45am.

Hosts, Tolip Sports City, and officials from the Tanzanian embassy in Egypt, welcomed the team.

The team then traveled by bus more than 180 kilometers from Cairo to Alexandria. Speaking yesterday morning, Taifa Stars' head coach Salum Mayanga said they were expected to start their training later yesterday at 08:00pm.

“We will start our training program later today at 08:00pm, but there are days we will be training in two sessions - morning and evening,” he said.

Taifa Stars are preparing for their AFCON Group L qualifiers' match against Lesotho which will be held at the Azam Complex at Chamazi in Dar es Salaam on June 10. The match will kick off at 08:00pm.

The 2019 AFCON finals will be held in Cameroon.

Other teams in the group L of the qualifiers are Uganda and Cape Verde,  who will also be throwing their cards against each other in the weekend of June 9, 10 and 11. Taifa Stars squad is made by goalkeepers Aishi Manula (Azam FC), Benno Kakolanya  (Yanga SC) and Said Mohammed (Mtibwa Sugar).

Defenders are Shomari Kapombe  (Azam FC), Hassan Kessy (Yanga SC), Mohammed Hussein (Simba), Gadiel Michael, Erasto Nyoni  (Azam FC), Salim Mbonde (Mtibwa Sugar), Abdi Banda (Simba SC) and Nurdin Chona (Tanzania Prisons).

Midfilders include Himid Mao (Azam FC), Salum Abubakar (Azam FC), Said Ndemla  (Simba SC), Mzamiru Yassin (Simba SC), Simon Msuva (Yanga SC), Shizza Kichuya (Simba SC) and Farid Mussa (Teneriffe, Hispania).

Forwards include Mbwana Samatta (KRC Genk - Belgium), Ulimwengu (AFC Eskilstuna – Sweden), Ibrahim Ajib (Simba SC), Mbaraka Yusufu (Kagera Sugar) and Abdulrahman Mussa (Ruvu Shooting).

The technical bench is made up of head coach Mayanga, his assistant Fulgence Novatus, goalkeeping coach Patrick Mwangata, team manager Danny Msangi, kit manager Ally Ruvu, team physician Richard Yomba and physiotherapist Gilbert Kigadye.
