Liverpool vs Manchester City
There’s a true Super Sunday clash in the Premier League today as Manchester City travel to Liverpool.
Man City moved above Liverpool in the league last weekend.
That was after Liverpool dropped their first points of the season away at Chelsea in a 1-1 draw.
League leaders Man City are above Liverpool on goal difference.
Man City are scared of Liverpool
In his weekly op-ed in the Sunday Times, Graeme Souness has claimed that Manchester City are “scared” of Liverpool.
Why? Because the Reds proved they had City’s number last season in all competitions. Souness wrote:
Have Liverpool planted that seed in City’s heads? They have won the past three matches between the sides.
It was clear in those matches last season that Liverpool have more high-energy players than City and the start of this campaign appears to have confirmed that.
Benjamin Mendy & Kevin De Bruyne
While there has been speculation that Benjamin Mendy could return for Man City against Liverpool, Souness isn’t counting on that to happen.
Accordingly, the pundit believes Man City are weak in that full-back slot:
If City have a weakness, it is at left-back. They’ve been playing Fabian Delph and Aymeric Laporte out of position there, but neither is a natural left-back and it shows.
Could Kevin De Bruyne return for the Sky Blues at Anfield?
De Bruyne was back in training last week for City. While Souness waxed lyrical about the Belgian midfielder:
When De Bruyne returns to full action, it will be like spending more than £100m on a new signing.
Can Chelsea win the league?
Souness also believes Chelsea won’t be serious challengers to win the Premier League this season:
Chelsea don’t come into my title equation unless they sign a top striker in the winter transfer window. For now, Liverpool are the team City fear most.
