Why physiotherapists are crucial for Tanzania clubs

Physiotherapists are people of great importance in football clubs for treating player injuries, deformity or muscle cramps and even guide players on exercises.Azania Post sports Reporter Amini Nyaungo caught up with Ebtu Physical Therapy Unit Director of Operations Gilbert Kigadye, to discuss among others the importance of therapy in football games. Here are excerpts;
Qn. What is your name?
Ans. My name is Gilbert Kigadye
Qn: Why are physiotherapists so important to players?
Ans: It is not only to players, but to vast other professionals, it contains many things and players are part of it.
Qn. Why is it that most football fans in Tanzania are not aware about the value of physiotherapists?
Ans: I think is just because of the background we come from, in the beginning, football is like any other game as we did not need preparation, lots of things were skipped-but for now football is a professional game. So, to do something professional, you need to involve lots of professional things…that is why in developing countries every team has a physiotherapists-it is the first line of intervention. In Tanzania, the majority of people do not know the difference between doctors and physiotherapists professionals. We treat without using medications-mostly we use physical treatments.
Qn: What do you mean when you say…you use physical treatment?
Ans: We use hands, electricity and other things without medicine, we do it physical. I urge all management teams to have physiotherapists’ professional.
Qn: Which player injuries do you treat the most here?
Ans: Mostly knee injury, ankle, hamstring and other injuries. Most of strikers come here with ankle and knee problems.
Qn: What is the best and the worst aspect of being a physiotherapist in football clubs?
Ans: Sometime back, my daughter was asked what I do for a living and she answered them, “My father (I) is a Baba cheza” meaning I use much of the time to treat player.
Qn: How importance is fitness in football clubs compared to other games that you have worked for?
Ans: If you are not fit, your performance will be poor. Therefore, fitness is very important to players
Qn: How does physiotherapists influence the career of a player, do you think their role is underrated?
Ans: If you have physiotherapists in your team, the number of injuries will decrease, the particular person will inform you how to use players and how to collaborate with the team doctors and team fitness. The players will be physically and mentally fit.
Qn: How did your passion end up to you being a physiotherapist in football clubs?
Ans: If you love your profession and being happy is the most important thing but first thing I need is to see the young generation join this profession. It is a very good thing.
Qn: Why haven’t you switched to other sports?
An: I have been dealing with football for a long time, it is not money, and anything that relates to physiotherapist…I just find it in order to treat.
